8-Inch World's Greatest Super-Heroes Batgirl from Mego

Joining Robin, The Joker, The Riddler, The Penguin, Catwoman, and (of course) Batman himself, is the crime-fighting heroine Batgirl.

With the Batman family making up a significant part of the Mego World's Greatest Super-Heroes universe, it only made sense that Mego would include Batgirl in the Super-Gals series of this line of action figures.

Mego 8-Inch Batgirl Action Figure

The original 1961 Batgirl.transparent-pixel-action-figuresIn 1961, long before appearing on the popular 1966-1968 Batman TV show, Batgirl was originally created for Batman comic books. This initial appearance in print reveals an extremely different character from the one made popular by Yvonne Craig in season three of the television series.

The '61 comic version of Batgirl had blonde hair, a green cape, red top & skirt, and her real identity was Betty Kane (possibly named after Batman creator Bob Kane).

It wasn't until a request by Batman TV show producers to add a female character to the show that the more iconic Batgirl we know today made an appearance.

Yvonne Craig as Batgirl from the popular 1960s Batman TV series.transparent-pixel-action-figuresIn 1967, DC Comics Editor Julius Schwartz worked with Batman TV show producers to create a new and improved Batgirl. Barbara Gordon, daughter of Police Commissioner James Gordon, was such a huge success on the TV series, that she was later introduced into the comic book series as well.

With the continued popularity of the TV series in the form of 1970s re-runs, it was a no-brainer for Mego to choose to go with the Barbara Gordon version of Batgirl for their action figure.

While not a dead ringer for the look made popular by the 1960s Batman TV show, Mego clearly leaned towards the costume design and look of the more popular Barbara Gordon version of Batgirl vs. the original 1961 Betty Kane version.

Sporting a Blue cape and cowl similar to Batman, the 8-inch Mego Batgirl figure has long rooted red hair akin to Yvonne Craig's red wig on the TV series. Although the bodysuit was changed from from purple to gray, Mego kept the large yellow chest emblem and large yellow Bat-utility belt.

The Mego 8-inch Batgirl also sports a pair of removable yellow "oven mitt" gloves and removable yellow boots.
